Have you ever heard anyone say this (who is not with a dog)? After a long day of working on their feet, you might hear this from your coworkers. It literally means, “My feet HURT!”
Foot pain has so many causes and so many remedies. But what really works? Expensive shoes, orthopedic shoes, no shoes, shoe socks? Exercises, stretches, rest?
We are an active society and in order to continue to live our best lives, we need healthy, pain-free feet! Imagine not being able to walk outside on a beautiful summer day or be able to stand for an hour to listen to your favorite musicians. Many of my patients describe how debilitated they feel due to foot or leg pain.
So what do you need?
You need someone that knows the anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology of your body and that will take the time to develop a personalized program for your specific needs. A foot evaluation, followed by a lower extremity evaluation, is crucial.
The solution could be something as simple as a few muscle stretches, or you may require treatment for inflammation, or you may need a shoe insert (an orthotic) which will help to realign your foot to its natural position. As we age, we can develop bunions, sagging metatarsal heads or weakness in our little feet muscles. These can lead to other, bigger issues if not corrected. Personalized orthotics can correct many foot problems and alleviate pain immediately! Many additions can be added to the orthotic to meet your individual needs, such as support under the metatarsal heads to alleviate claw toeing, or deep heel cups to stabilize your arch position and ankle alignment.
Orthotics are also invaluable to the elite athlete. The company that we use to customize our orthotics has been providing orthotics to professional and college-level football, baseball, and hockey teams for over 20 years! They also offer orthotics specific for golf shoes and cleats, as well as formal-wear shoes and street shoes. They are the best! They guarantee their work and we have been extremely pleased to work with them. Orthotics maintain the body’s natural alignment and thus help eliminate strains and sprains. This allows any athlete from weekend warrior to professional to continue to compete at a higher level with less risk for foot, ankle and even knee injuries.
The foot is a very complex structure and if you experience any type of foot or leg pain, let our experienced specialist physical therapists at Physical Therapy and Lifetime Wellness help keep you living your best life, and have happy feet!
