What is “Pilates” exactly?
Pilates is a mind and body conditioning exercise program that targets the deep postural muscles of the abdomen and spine to improve overall central core stability and posture. The mind and body work together to achieve these aims through the following eight principles: concentration, centering, breathing, isolation, routine, precision, control, and flowing motion.
The Pilates method was invented by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s. Joseph referred to his work as “Contrology” emphasizing the importance of having strength but control in all movements. The Pilates method has become extremely popular over the years and also has evolved into various different styles from “classical” Pilates to Pilates for rehabilitation.
Pilates is beneficial for all ages and fitness levels, especially for back pain, poor posture, sports injuries, arthritis, stress related illness and before or after pregnancy.
Top 6 Reasons to do Pilates
1. Pilates is Whole Body Fitness
While focusing on core strengthening, Pilates includes breath work, concentration, flexibility and increased range of motion for all joints.
2. Create Lean, Long Muscles…not Bulky Muscles
Pilates takes advantage of working muscles in an “eccentric” contraction or strengthening the muscles as they lengthen instead of shorten forming strong, lean and more functional strength in each muscle.
3. Develop Core Strength
Core muscles of the body include the deep muscles of the abdomen, back and pelvic floor.
4. Improve Posture
Good posture is a reflection of good alignment supported by a strong core.
5. Increases Flexibility
Pilates works towards a safe increase in length and stretch in both the muscles and the joints range of motion without pretzel like poses as in yoga.
6. Increases Awareness and the Mind/Body Connection
One of the foundations of Pilates is that each movement is practiced with total attention. When we practice this way we combine the mind and body to bring forth the most benefit possible from each exercise.
